Wall push-up

Chesteasyrepswall

A push-up done standing, with the hands on a wall instead of the floor. Stand about an arm's length from the wall, put the palms on it at about shoulder height, bend the elbows and lean toward the wall until the nose nearly touches it, then push back to the start. The body stays upright, so the arms carry only part of the body weight, and the wrists are loaded less than in a floor push-up. Standing farther from the wall makes it harder.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing a wall about an arm's length away, feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Place the palms on the wall at about shoulder height, roughly shoulder-width apart, fingers pointing up. If you feel you are overreaching, move the feet closer to the wall.
  3. Keep the body in one straight line from the head to the heels, with the hips not dipping forward. Bend the elbows, keeping them at about 45 degrees to the body rather than flared straight out, and lean toward the wall until the nose nearly touches it.
  4. Push back slowly to the start. Move with control; if you have a condition such as shoulder impingement, take care and check with a health professional.
